In House District (HD) 62, Rep. Reggie Smith (R-Sherman) has defeated Shelley Luther, the Dallas business owner who spent the night in jail after a Democrat sentenced her for reopening her salon.

With all precincts reporting, Luther lost the Republican nomination to Smith by a margin of 59 percent to 41 percent. Smith will likely cruise to victory in this deeply Republican district.

Previously, Luther ran unsuccessfully for a Texas Senate seat being vacated by Congressman Pat Fallon (R-TX-04). In that race, Luther lost to Sen. Drew Springer (R-Muenster).

After redistricting, HD 62 was rated R-62% in The Texan’s Texas Partisan Index. No Democrats filed to run for the seat.

Smith was first elected to the Texas House in 2018.
