After losing his Harris County seat in 2018, Mike Schofield won his rematch against Rep. Gina Calanni (D-Katy) on Tuesday evening in House District (HD) 132.

With all polling locations reporting their numbers to Harris County, Schofield led the race by 51.8 percent to Calanni’s 48.1 percent, a margin of about 3,800 votes.

An analysis from The Texan found that HD 132 is the most Republican-leaning district of those currently held by Democrats.

Schofield first won the seat in 2014 with 66 percent of the vote and was reelected in 2016 with 80 percent against only a Libertarian opponent.

In 2018, Calanni won the race against Schofield with an extremely narrow lead of 113 votes and was the only Democrat to win with less than 50 percent of the vote.

During the same election, former congressman Beto O’Rourke carried the district with 51.4 percent of the vote in the challenge against Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) while Gov. Abbott carried the district with 52.3 percent against his Democratic challenger.

Like several other Republicans challenging Democratic incumbents, Schofield’s support was bolstered significantly in the last month by outside support.

In the last campaign finance report filed before the election, Schofield reported $487,000 of in-kind contributions from the Republican State Leadership Committee and its grassroots account, $123,000 from the Associated Republicans of Texas, $93,000 from the Greg Abbott campaign, and $82,000 from the Texans for Lawsuit Reform PAC.

Throughout the entire race, Schofield outraised Calanni by $1.4 million to $1.1 million, with $1 million of his total receipts coming in during the last filing period.

Neither Schofield nor Calanni had released a statement regarding the election results as of the time of publishing.

Schofield was included in the list of members who are supporting Rep. Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont) to be the new state House speaker for the 87th Legislature.

Schofield’s win in HD 132 offsets the single Democratic gain in HD 134 to make the partisan makeup of the Texas House remain unchanged.
